US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke at the NAFSA conference in Washington, DC, emphasizing the role of international education in US diplomacy and national security.
He outlined the Biden administration’s efforts to streamline study visa processes and expand inclusive study abroad opportunities, particularly following the post-COVID surge in international student applications.
Visa Process Enhancements
Blinken noted, “After the acute phase of the Covid-19 pandemic ended, more and more international students began applying to study in the US again. We took steps to streamline our visa process and make it easier for students to apply.”
Key measures include:
- Prioritizing student visas by consular teams, with some students eligible to apply without interviews.
- Extending the visa application window to one year in advance, up from 120 days.
- Issuing over 580,000 student visas in 2022, the highest in five years.
Expanding Study Abroad Opportunities
The State Department is collaborating with foreign governments, higher education institutions, and NAFSA to promote research and study abroad programs, including the Fulbright program. Efforts to enhance inclusivity involve:
- Partnering with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities to recruit students and faculty from Hispanic-serving institutions.
- Eliminating the minimum length requirement for the Gilman scholarship program, enabling students with work or family obligations, including those from African regions, to participate in shorter study abroad experiences.
Blinken acknowledged debates about short-term study abroad programs but cited research showing they reduce participation barriers and foster further international engagement.
Commitment to Global Education
Blinken reaffirmed the State Department’s dedication to expanding international education, stating, “We are working to expand international education.”
The department aims to create accessible opportunities and improve initiatives to support global student mobility and cross-cultural exchange.
