The Federal Government of Nigeria has recovered N34.346 billion and $1.62 million between 2019 and 2021, alongside saving N261 billion through the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) tracking initiative.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, during a press conference detailing the government’s anti-corruption efforts.
ICPC Initiative Traces Over 2,000 Projects Worth N300 Billion
According to the Minister, the ICPC launched the Constituency and Executive Projects Tracking Initiative in 2019, aiming to ensure proper implementation and accountability in the execution of government projects.
“Between 2019 and 2021, ICPC traced 2,000 projects valued at over N300 billion. During the same period, 326 contractors were compelled to return to abandoned sites to complete projects worth N32.183 billion,” Mohammed stated.
Asset Recovery and System Review Save Billions
The ICPC’s Assets Tracing, Recovery and Management (ATRM) program led to the recovery of over N34 billion and $1.62 million in stolen or mismanaged public funds. Additionally, its System Study and Review of MDAs’ personnel and capital budgets saved the government N261 billion.
Strengthening Accountability in Government
The Minister noted that the anti-corruption drive has led to structural improvements in project delivery, budget use, and public awareness. Between 2019 and 2021, 66 convictions were secured from 243 cases filed in court by the ICPC.
The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, especially in response to budget inefficiencies flagged by civic organizations such as BudgIT Nigeria, which previously reported over 300 duplicated capital projects in the 2021 budget.
