The Federal Government has launched the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Passport Express Centre in Abuja, aimed at improving passport service delivery through a public-private partnership.

The new centre will ensure that passports are issued within a maximum of 72 hours after a successful application.

The initiative was inaugurated on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, by the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, who shared the update via his official social media platforms.

Quicker, Stress-Free Passport Issuance

According to the Minister, the goal is to eliminate unnecessary delays and stress often associated with the passport application process.

“Every Nigerian has the right to a passport, and our duty is to make it available swiftly and without hassle,” Aregbesola stated. “The passport should be ready within 72 hours of a successful application.”

He further revealed that Nigerians will have access to two service options:

  • High premium service: Passport delivery within 24 hours.
  • Ordinary premium service: Delivery within 72 hours.

These services come with enhanced convenience at an additional cost.

Reducing Corruption and Enhancing Efficiency

Aregbesola emphasized that the express centre was introduced to reduce physical contact, thereby limiting corruption and improving transparency in the passport application process.

“By minimising human contact, we reduce the chances of corrupt practices. This centre offers a smoother and more pleasant experience for Nigerians, unlike the traditional passport offices,” he added.

The express centre is expected to set a new standard in passport administration and improve public confidence in the immigration service.
