On September 16, 2021, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) called on Nigerian law enforcement, particularly the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), to end the harassment of legitimate tech startups.
NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, made the appeal during a meeting with Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali in Abuja, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria.
Startups Face Disruption
Inuwa highlighted complaints from startups about harassment by law enforcement officers.
Some have had their IT systems confiscated, disrupting their operations and harming Nigeria’s economy.
NITDA maintains a database of registered, legitimate startups, which it offered to share with the police to verify genuine businesses and prevent unfair targeting.
NITDA’s Offer of Collaboration
Inuwa emphasized NITDA’s readiness to work with the police to implement the Nigerian Data Protection Regulation (NDPR).
This regulation aims to protect citizens’ personal data, combat cybercrime, and promote safer internet use.
He stressed the growing importance of cybersecurity in a world increasingly reliant on digital technology, noting the rising sophistication of cyberattacks.
Why Cybersecurity Matters
“Cybersecurity is critical today,” Inuwa said. “With relentless cyberattacks, we need collaboration between NITDA and the police to protect personal information and tackle cybercrime.”
He warned that the trend of cyberattacks shows no signs of slowing, making partnerships essential to safeguard Nigeria’s digital economy.
Supporting a Digital Nigeria
Inuwa underscored the vital role of startups in building a digital Nigeria. Harassment of legitimate businesses undermines this goal.
By sharing its database and supporting data protection, NITDA aims to foster a safer environment for tech innovation and economic growth.
