The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued an essential update regarding the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). In a statement released on Thursday, January 22, 2026, the commission clarified that the current exercise is limited strictly to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
This targeted distribution is a key part of the preparations for the FCT Area Council Elections. These elections are scheduled to take place on February 21, 2026.
Warning Against Misinformation
Following reports of confusion among voters in other states, INEC used its official X (Twitter) handle to urge caution. The commission advised citizens outside the capital not to rely on unverified social media reports. Many of these reports incorrectly suggest that nationwide collection has started.
“For other States, the dates for PVC collection have not yet been fixed by the Commission,” the statement clarified. Furthermore, INEC assured the public that official dates for other regions will be announced soon. These updates will appear across all official platforms once the schedules are finalized.
FCT Collection Schedule and Locations
To ensure maximum accessibility, the commission has established a two-phase collection process for FCT voters.
Phase 1: Ward-Level Collection
- Dates: January 22 to January 26, 2026.
- Daily Time: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
- Location: Your respective Registration Areas (Wards) within the FCT.
Phase 2: Area Council Office Collection
If you are unable to visit your ward during the initial five-day window, you can still claim your card. After January 26, the exercise will move to the various INEC Area Council offices across the FCT.
Commitment to Transparency
INEC reiterated its commitment to an orderly and transparent election process. Therefore, the commission urged FCT voters to take immediate advantage of the ward-level distribution to avoid last-minute crowds.
In addition, the electoral body called on voters in the 36 states to remain patient. “We urge all eligible voters in other States to wait for official communication and avoid relying on unverified information,” the commission added.
