Peru President Inquiry: Jeri to Testify on Secret Meetings

Peru President inquiry

A transparency crisis has forced Peru’s leader to face his critics head-on.

On Tuesday, President Jose Jeri officially requested to testify before the legislative oversight committee. The move attempts to stem the bleeding from a widening Peru President inquiry involving undisclosed encounters with a foreign businessman.

Jeri’s letter to Congress argued that the nation deserves full clarity on matters of public interest. Consequently, committee head Elvis Vergara confirmed he will schedule the high-stakes hearing immediately.

“Hidden” Agendas Trigger Investigation

The scandal erupts from two private meetings—held on December 26 and January 6—that were omitted from the official government calendar. In Peru, protocol dictates that leaders must publicly log all appointments to prevent corruption.

Jeri met with Zhihua Yang, a Chinese executive with holdings in the energy and retail sectors. Opposition leaders argue these off-the-books discussions signal potential impropriety. Adding fuel to the fire, regulators recently suspended Yang’s business operations for distributing unauthorized merchandise.

Apologies Fail to Quell Doubts

The President attempted damage control on Sunday regarding the first encounter. He characterized the dinner at a Chinese restaurant as a lapse in judgment rather than a crime.

“I publicly apologize for entering the meeting hidden. I admit that this behavior gave rise to suspicion,” Jeri stated in a recorded address.

However, the narrative quickly complicated. Shortly after his plea for forgiveness, news broke of a second undocumented meeting. This revelation deepened the distrust between the executive branch and the public prosecutor, who has since launched a formal probe.

Impeachment Risks and Election Pressures

This controversy strikes at a delicate moment for Peruvian stability. The nation has experienced severe leadership turbulence, cycling through seven presidents since 2018. Jeri, who only took office in October, now faces the threat of removal.

Despite the uproar, analysts believe the President may survive.

  • The Numbers: Ousting Jeri requires 87 votes out of 130 lawmakers.
  • The Context: With general elections set for April 2026, many legislators are prioritizing their own campaigns over another disruptive impeachment trial.
  • Public Sentiment: Surprisingly, Jeri maintains a 44% approval rating despite the negative headlines.
