China’s State Council Customs Tariff Commission has unveiled a sweeping set of tariff reductions for 2026, effective 1 January, to cut costs on essential materials and boost domestic industries.
Focus on Green Tech and Health
The adjustments target two priority areas:
- Battery Materials: Lower duties on recycled black powder for lithium-ion batteries to support electric vehicle production and promote resource recycling
- Medical Equipment: Reduced tariffs on artificial blood vessels and rapid diagnostic kits for infectious diseases to improve healthcare access and modernise facilities
Wider Trade Strategy
A total of 935 items will enjoy provisional rates below standard Most-Favored-Nation levels for WTO members. Officials say the cuts will:
- Strengthen links between Chinese and global markets
- Encourage higher-quality imports
- Ease pressure on manufacturers and consumers
The move reflects Beijing’s push for sustainable growth and affordable public services amid evolving global trade dynamics.
