Travelers moving through Nigeria’s airports this holiday can expect a very different experience. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has activated a high-intensity operational plan. This strategy aims to eliminate the gridlock that typically plagues FAAN festive season operations.
Under the direction of Managing Director Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, the authority is moving beyond standard preparation. Instead, they are deploying advanced traffic forecasting and on-ground tactical teams to manage the year-end surge.
Streamlining FAAN Festive Season Operations
The most visible change for passengers is the introduction of a dedicated “augmentation team.” These officers are deployed specifically to decongest terminals.
Travelers can identify these support staff by their branded shirts and jackets. They are stationed at critical checkpoints to provide real-time guidance. Furthermore, FAAN has mobilized over 80 additional security personnel. Their primary mandate is managing crowd control and vehicular flow outside the terminals.
To ensure speed, the authority has also secured agreements with key agencies. High-level discussions with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and Customs (NCS) aim to slash processing times. Consequently, the usual bottlenecks at passport control and baggage claim should be significantly reduced.
A “Zero Tolerance” Stance on Extortion
Beyond logistics, FAAN is declaring war on corruption. Mr. Henry Agbebire, Director of Public Affairs, confirmed the authority’s “zero-tolerance policy” regarding staff misconduct.
Passengers are often targeted for illegal fees during peak periods. To combat this, FAAN has empowered travelers with technology.
-
QR Code Reporting: Airports now feature scannable codes for immediate, real-time reporting of harassment.
-
Surveillance: Supervisors are coordinating with agencies to spot and punish unethical behavior.
-
Public Advisory: Officials are urging passengers to firmly refuse any requests for bribes.
Maintaining Comfort Amid Construction
Despite ongoing infrastructure projects, the authority promises that passenger comfort remains a priority. Technical teams are monitoring HVAC systems around the clock to ensure air conditioning functions properly.
Moreover, all domestic terminals will run on 24/7 operational shifts. While airline delays remain under the purview of the NCAA, FAAN is focused on “airport-side” efficiency. This ensures that even when flights are disrupted, the terminal environment remains secure and functional.
