Nigeria Maintains 38th Position in Year-End FIFA World Rankings

Rankings

The Super Eagles have ended the year in a stable position within the global football hierarchy. According to the final FIFA Men’s World Rankings for December 2025, Nigeria remains in 38th place globally.

Since the team has not played any competitive matches since the previous update, Nigeria’s total points remain locked at 1,502. Consequently, the team’s position has not shifted as the year draws to a close.

African Continental Standings

Nigeria concludes 2025 as the fifth-highest ranked team in Africa. While the Super Eagles maintain a solid position, they continue to trail behind the continent’s leading heavyweights.

Morocco remains the top-ranked African nation, sitting at 11th globally. Following them are Senegal (19th), Algeria (34th), and Egypt (35th). Other notable African teams in the global top 60 include:

  • Tunisia: 41st
  • Côte d’Ivoire: 42nd
  • Mali: 53rd
  • DR Congo: 56th
  • Cameroon: 57th

Notably, Morocco’s recent victory at the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 nearly pushed them into the world’s top 10. They currently trail Croatia by a mere 0.54 points.

Global Leaders and Top Performers

On the world stage, Spain continues to hold the number one spot. They reclaimed this position from Argentina in September 2025 and have maintained it since. The global top 10 remains entirely unchanged from the November update, reflecting a period of stability among elite teams.

The current Global Top 10 includes:

  1. Spain
  2. Argentina]
  3. France
  4. England
  5. Brazil
  6. Portugal
  7. Netherlands
  8. Belgium
  9. Germany
  10. Croatia

Standout Performers of 2025

While the top of the rankings remained steady, several nations made significant progress throughout the year. Kosovo emerged as the standout performer of 2025. They jumped 19 places to finish at 80th after winning seven of their ten matches.

Additionally, Norway (29th) and Suriname (123rd) recorded impressive growth. In the month of December alone, Jordan, Vietnam, and Singapore saw the largest upward movements, each climbing two to three spots.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Nigeria’s current ranking reflects a period of stability, but it also highlights a gap between the Super Eagles and Africa’s top four teams. Football analysts suggest that the upcoming AFCON 2025 tournament will be a vital opportunity. If Nigeria performs well, they could accumulate the points necessary to break back into the global top 30 in early 2026.
