The Federal Government has announced that Nigeria’s newly confirmed ambassadors will officially begin their duties in early 2026.
This development follows the successful screening and clearance of the nominees by the National Assembly.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, shared these details during an end-of-year press briefing on Monday.
He noted that while the primary legislative hurdles are now over, the final administrative steps for their deployment will be finalized in the coming year.
Ending a Long Diplomatic Vacuum
This deployment aims to resolve a long-standing vacancy in Nigeria’s foreign missions. Since the mass recall of envoys in 2023, many of the country’s strategic posts have lacked full representation. Consequently, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed these new officials to address public concerns and restore Nigeria’s presence abroad.

The Senate recently confirmed a total of 67 ambassadorial nominees. This diverse group is divided into 34 career diplomats and 33 non-career appointees.
The list features several prominent figures from Nigeria’s political and academic landscapes. Notable appointees include former Minister of Interior Abdulrahman Dambazau, former INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, and former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode.
Other confirmed nominees include former presidential aide Reno Omokri, former Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), as well as former Senator Grace Bent.
Final Steps for 2026 Deployment
Minister Idris emphasized that the deployment is a priority for the administration’s foreign policy. By sending these representatives to their stations, the government intends to reposition its foreign missions. This will help the country better serve Nigerians living abroad and attract vital foreign investment.
“In 2026, our newly appointed ambassadors will take up their posts,” Idris stated. He added that President Tinubu has fulfilled his promise to address the agitations for these critical posts to be filled.
