Zamzam camp massacre

A new United Nations report exposes a dark chapter in Sudan’s civil war. Paramilitary forces slaughtered at least 1,000 civilians during a Zamzam camp massacre in North Darfur.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) orchestrated the bloodshed in April 2025. Consequently, the findings highlight a terrifying escalation in the ongoing conflict.

Strategic Brutality Behind the Attack

The violence served a specific military purpose. According to the report, the RSF launched the assault to seize El Fasher, the provincial capital.

However, the paramilitary group weakened the target long before the shooting started. They enforced a months-long blockade. Therefore, vital supplies like medicine and food could not reach the 500,000 displaced people sheltering there.

Three Days of Terror

The physical attack spanned from April 11 to April 13. During this time, the camp descended into chaos.

The UN investigation documented harrowing atrocities:

  • Summary Executions: Fighters killed hundreds of residents without trial.

  • Sexual Violence: Widespread rape occurred during the siege.

  • Starvation: The blockade served as a pre-meditated weapon of war.

Furthermore, the destruction of this massive refuge site has created a humanitarian catastrophe. The UN asserts that these tactics—mixing military force with starvation—violate international law.
