30 Jailed as Manhunt for Ringleader Intensifies After Failed Benin Coup

Benin treason charges

Authorities in Cotonou have formally jailed approximately 30 suspects following the recent failed attempt to topple the government. A pre-trial hearing on Tuesday resulted in the remand of these individuals, most of whom are military personnel. They now face a litany of severe accusations, including murder, endangering state security, and Benin treason charges.

While the courtroom proceedings mark a significant step in restoring order, the security operation is far from over. The alleged architect of the insurrection remains at large.

Manhunt Across Borders

Security forces are currently searching for Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri. Officials have identified him as the primary leader behind the uprising. Intelligence reports suggest Tigri has evaded capture by crossing the border into Lomé, the capital of neighboring Togo.

Consequently, the administration in Cotonou has issued a formal extradition request to Togolese officials. They are demanding the return of Tigri and other soldiers who fled the country to face Benin treason charges.

Anatomy of a Failed Takeover

The instability erupted on December 7. A faction of rogue soldiers stormed the state television headquarters, using the broadcast to declare the government dissolved. However, the mutiny collapsed quickly.

Loyalist troops launched an immediate counter-offensive. Furthermore, international allies played a decisive role in crushing the rebellion. Nigeria and other West African partners supplied air support, while France provided critical logistical backing.

Grievances Driving the Plot

The investigation has shed light on the motivations behind the attack. Rebel soldiers claimed they acted due to dissatisfaction with President Patrice Talon’s leadership. Specifically, the group cited a deteriorating security crisis in the northern regions.

Additionally, the plotters pointed to recent cuts in healthcare funding and alleged political suppression as key drivers for their actions. Despite these claims, the state is moving swiftly to prosecute those involved with full Benin treason charges.
