The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has launched a major financial support program in Nasarawa State.
On Tuesday, she distributed N50 million to support the livelihoods of 250 less-privileged elderly citizens.
The disbursement took place in Lafia, the state capital. This initiative aims to provide immediate relief and improve the quality of life for senior citizens across the state.
Direct Financial Support
Under the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme, each beneficiary received a cash grant of N200,000.
Senator Tinubu was represented by Shela Akabe, wife of the Nasarawa State Deputy Governor. Speaking on behalf of the First Lady, Akabe explained the donation reflects a deep commitment to the elderly. She emphasized the goal is ensuring they experience comfort in their later years.
A Nationwide Effort
The distribution in Nasarawa is part of a massive nationwide campaign. The scheme targets citizens aged 65 and above in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja). It also includes veterans from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA).
“Each state of the federation, the FCT, and the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association were given N50 million, amounting to N1.9 billion,” Akabe revealed.
She noted that the project aligns with the Federal Government’s “Renewed Hope” agenda. This agenda focuses on inclusive growth to ensure no Nigerian is left behind.
Honoring Senior Citizens
In her message, the First Lady highlighted the importance of caring for the older generation, especially during the festive season. She acknowledged their past sacrifices.
“They have walked difficult paths so that the younger generations may have smoother roads to travel,” she stated. “It is our duty to make life worthwhile for them at this point.”
She advised beneficiaries to find purpose in community and compassion. She reminded them that old age should be defined by love and respect, not just longevity.
Local Appreciation
Silifat Abdullahi-Sule, the First Lady of Nasarawa State, expressed her gratitude. She was represented by Sa’Adatu Yahaya, Executive Secretary of the Nasarawa State Scholarship Board.
Mrs. Abdullahi-Sule confirmed the beneficiaries were carefully selected from the state’s 13 Local Government Areas. She urged the recipients to use the funds wisely for their health and well-being.
