Nigeria continues to make steady progress in closing its electricity metering gap. The national metering rate rose to 56.07 per cent as of October 2025.
According to the latest Metering Factsheet released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the country witnessed a significant uptick in installations between September and October.
In September 2025, the total active customer base stood at 12.03 million, with 6.66 million metered. During that month, DisCos installed 80,943 new meters, resulting in a metering rate of 55.37 per cent.
By October, the momentum increased. The total customer base grew slightly to 12.07 million, while the number of metered customers rose to 6.77 million.
The commission reported that 106,822 customers received meters in October an increase of over 25,000 installations compared to the previous month. This performance pushed the national average to 56.07 per cent.
DisCo Performance: Winners and Laggards
The factsheet highlights significant disparities in performance across the 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos).
Top Performers:
- Aba Power Distribution Company recorded the most remarkable improvement, boosting its metering rate from 69.49 per cent in September to 78.20 per cent in October.
- Eko DisCo and Ikeja Electric maintained their leadership positions, sustaining metering rates above 84 per cent.
- Abuja and Ibadan DisCos also posted steady gains, attributed to improved customer onboarding and rollout strategies.
Underperformers: Conversely, several DisCos are still struggling to bridge the gap. Enugu, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola DisCos all recorded metering rates below 50 per cent. NERC has cautioned these operators to accelerate deployment to prevent the metering deficit in their franchise areas from widening further.

The push for faster deployment comes as regulatory authorities confirm that a substantial inventory of meters is already in the country.
Musiliu Oseni, the Vice Chairman of NERC, previously disclosed that between 600,000 and 700,000 electricity meters are currently available in stock.
The commission has urged distribution companies to speed up their rollout efforts and improve communication with the public to ensure these assets reach unmetered end-users efficiently.
