NFF Moves to Settle Eric Chelle’s Salary Arrears as AFCON Camp Hits Full Gear

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) intends to minimize financial distractions as it moves to resolve outstanding payments for the national team handler.

As the Super Eagles officially commence their training camp in Egypt today, Wednesday, December 10, NFF officials act to quell concerns regarding Coach Eric Chelle’s wages.

Moreover, reports confirm that the Federation currently owes the tactical head three months of salary, alongside unpaid bonuses.

NFF Explains the “Cash Backing” Delay

A high-ranking source within the Federation states that the administrative machinery acts to clear the debt.

Notably, the delay stems from procedural bureaucratic hurdles rather than a lack of intent. Specifically, the Federation awaits “cash backing”—the final financial clearance required to release the funds.

“The coach came to see us, and we explained the processes,” the NFF insider revealed.

Furthermore, the official emphasized that transparency remains a priority between the employer and the technical crew.

“His money will be paid. We have paid him in advance before, and this time, we are waiting for cash backing from finance. The money on paper has been paid, and the coach is aware,” the source added.

Administrative Context

Significantly, the NFF has adjusted salary structures before. Previously, the National Sports Commission utilized a support group to facilitate wage payments through October.

This interim measure provided the NFF with a window to secure more sustainable, long-term funding solutions.

Consequently, officials urge patience, noting that the media never publicized previous instances where Chelle received advance payments.

Squad Deadlines and Camp Schedule

Meanwhile, the focus on the pitch remains sharp while the boardroom sorts out administrative issues. The Super Eagles camp opens today in Egypt, a strategic location chosen for acclimatization before the team heads to Morocco.

Therefore, preparation intensity will spike immediately.

  • December 10–11: Coach Chelle must submit his final 28-man squad list.

  • December 15: The mandatory deadline for clubs to release called-up players.

  • December 16: An unofficial friendly match against the Pharaohs of Egypt takes place.

Redemption Mission in Morocco

The stakes for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations stand incredibly high. This tournament marks Chelle’s third major assignment since he took the reins in January.

Additionally, the team faces immense pressure to deliver after a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to DR Congo, which cost them a ticket to the 2026 World Cup.

Regarding the tournament structure, CAF placed Nigeria in Group C, where they will face Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Currently, the Eagles chase a fourth continental crown to add to their triumphs in 1980, 1994, and 2013.

Group C Match Schedule

  • Dec 23: Nigeria vs. Tanzania (Fès)

  • Dec 27: Nigeria vs. Tunisia (Fès)

  • Dec 31: Nigeria vs. Uganda (Fès)
