Switzerland Moves Closer to New EU Deal After Strong Domestic Support

Share:

Switzerland

The Swiss Federal Council has announced widespread backing from cantons, parties and business groups for a major update to the country’s relationship with the European Union.

Almost three-quarters of consulted stakeholders gave the green light during a national review completed Friday.

What the Package Covers

The agreement modernises cooperation in:

  • Electricity markets
  • State aid rules
  • Transport links
  • Freedom of movement
  • Switzerland’s financial contribution to EU programmes

Why It Matters

Switzerland is the EU’s fourth-biggest trading partner. With global tensions rising, Bern sees closer ties as essential for economic security and future opportunities for young Swiss citizens.

Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis said the “bilateral path” clearly won over alternatives like full EU membership or a basic free trade deal.

Addressing the Big Worry: Dynamic Alignment

One sticking point has been the requirement for Switzerland to automatically adopt certain new EU laws. To calm critics, the government promised a new domestic law giving parliament a stronger say on when and how such changes are applied.

Next Steps

  • Draft sent to parliament in March 2026
  • Possible nationwide referendum in 2027 or later

With domestic support locked in, Switzerland is now on track to reset and strengthen its unique partnership with Brussels.
