Panic and Gridlock as Fire Erupts on Third Mainland Bridge

Mainland Bridge

For thousands of Lagos commuters, the Tuesday evening drive home turned into a nightmare scenario. A massive fire erupted on the Third Mainland Bridge, forcing a complete shutdown of a key section and sparking traffic chaos.

The inferno broke out near the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) facility at the Adekunle section. The blaze raged on the inward lane heading toward Iyana Oworo, sending thick smoke into the sky and panic through the line of vehicles.

A “Devastating” Scene

Witnesses described a scene of confusion as the fire quickly escalated. Traffic management officials labeled the incident a “devastating conflagration.”

Almost immediately, the flow of vehicles ground to a halt. Red taillights stretched for miles as the reality of the situation set in: the bridge was impassable.

Emergency responders wasted no time. Officers swiftly cordoned off the affected section to prevent a disaster. Their primary goal was clear: mitigate the situation and ensure the safety of terrified motorists trapped near the flames.

Firefighters Battle the Blaze

Sirens wailed across the lagoon as the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service arrived on site.

Firefighters sprang into action, battling the flames to bring the situation under control. While they worked, traffic officers undertook the difficult task of diverting thousands of cars. They directed frustrated drivers to alternative routes in a desperate bid to clear the gridlock building up on both the Island and Mainland approaches.

The Aftermath

As at the gathering of this report, the exact cause of the fire remained a mystery. However, amidst the chaos and the smoke, there was a silver lining. Authorities confirmed that there were no immediate reports of casualties.

For now, the 11.8-kilometer bridge the lifeline connecting Lagos Island to the Mainland—remains a zone of caution. While the flames have been doused, the traffic headache for Lagosians is far from over.
