President Bola Tinubu has reportedly selected General Christopher Musa (rtd) as Nigeria’s next Minister of Defence. Musa is the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff.
This decision follows a closed-door meeting at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa. The President met with the retired General on Monday evening.
General Musa arrived at the State House shortly after 7:00 pm. notably, this was his first official engagement with the Presidency since his retirement from military service on October 24, 2025.
Presidential Endorsement
Sources within the Presidency revealed details of the private discussion. They stated that President Tinubu explicitly informed the former Defence Chief of his appointment plans.
According to insiders, the President delivered the message directly. He reportedly told Musa, “You will succeed Badaru as Defence Minister.”
Badaru Bows Out on Health Grounds
The cabinet vacancy exists because Mohammed Badaru Abubakar resigned. The former Jigawa State governor stepped down on Monday night. He cited health concerns as the sole reason for his departure.
Badaru held the defence portfolio since August 2023. In a formal letter dated December 1, 2025, he explained his decision. He stated that his exit was based on strict medical advice.
Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed the development. He stated that the President has accepted the resignation.
“President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and thanked Abubakar for his services to the nation,” the statement read. Additionally, Tinubu expressed appreciation for Badaru’s commitment during his tenure.
Senate Confirmation Imminent
The Presidency indicated there will be no delay in filling this strategic role. President Tinubu is expected to send the nominee’s name to the Senate soon.
The screening and confirmation process will likely begin within the coming days. “President Tinubu will likely inform the Senate of Badaru’s successor later this week,” the statement added.
General Musa’s appointment marks a transition from military command to civilian oversight. Consequently, he brings recent operational experience to the cabinet.
