Samuel Eto’o has firmly secured his position at the helm of Cameroonian football for another four years. The legendary striker was re-elected as President of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) on Saturday, running unopposed in a decisive victory. This fresh mandate allows him to continue shaping the nation’s football administration through 2029.
Unanimous Support Amidst Tension
During the General Assembly held in Cameroon’s central region, Eto’o received an overwhelming vote of confidence. Delegates awarded him all 85 available votes, signaling absolute backing from the federation’s inner circle. Consequently, this unanimous result cements his authority despite external pressures.
However, the road to re-election was far from smooth. The process unfolded against a backdrop of severe friction with the government. The Ministry of Education, which manages the national sports portfolio, had explicitly called for the cancellation of the assembly. Tensions escalated to the point where demonstrators gathered outside the venue, voicing strong opposition to the current leadership’s conduct.
World Cup Qualification Struggles
This political victory comes at a critical time for Samuel Eto’o. His administration faces intense scrutiny following the national team’s recent on-field performance. Specifically, the Indomitable Lions’ failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup has sparked widespread dissatisfaction.
Critics argue that administrative missteps directly contributed to the team missing the global tournament. Therefore, while Eto’o has secured the boardroom vote, winning back the trust of the broader public remains his next major challenge.
