The United Nations has officially demanded an immediate halt to hostilities in Eastern Europe. This historic vote marks exactly four years since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began.
During an emergency session on Tuesday in New York, the General Assembly took decisive action. Diplomats overwhelmingly adopted a resolution demanding a full and unconditional ceasefire.
Consequently, the international body reaffirmed its strict commitment to Ukrainian sovereignty.
Overwhelming Support to End Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine
The newly passed measure is titled “Support for lasting peace in Ukraine.” It outlines specific, non-negotiable requirements for ending the brutal conflict.
-
Prisoner Swaps: Immediate exchange of all prisoners of war.
-
Civilian Return: The safe return of forcibly transferred civilians, including children.
-
Territorial Integrity: Complete respect for Ukraine’s independent borders.
The global community largely backed this crucial peace initiative. The resolution successfully secured 107 votes in favor, with Nigeria among the supporters.
Meanwhile, 12 nations voted against it. Furthermore, 51 countries opted to abstain from the diplomatic vote.
Secretary-General Condemns Surging Civilian Casualties
UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the ongoing violence. He noted the unprovoked conflict directly violates fundamental international law.
Furthermore, he highlighted the devastating human cost of the protracted war.
“This devastating war is a stain on our collective consciousness and remains a threat to regional and international peace and security,” Guterres stated.
He emphasized the rapidly escalating danger for innocent non-combatants.
“The longer the war continues, the deadlier it becomes. Civilians bear the brunt of this conflict, with 2025 witnessing the largest number of civilians killed in Ukraine,” he noted.
Therefore, the UN chief urged immediate diplomatic intervention to stop the bloodshed.
“This is simply unacceptable. I reiterate my call for an immediate, full and unconditional ceasefire as a first step towards a just, lasting and comprehensive peace,” he declared.
Ultimately, Guterres confirmed the organization’s unwavering commitment to resolving the crisis.
“The United Nations remains ready to contribute to all efforts towards this end,” he added.
