Europe’s oldest reigning monarch is currently receiving urgent medical care abroad. Norway King Harald hospitalized in Tenerife, Spain, on Tuesday. The 89-year-old suffered an unexpected infection and severe dehydration.
Fortunately, the royal palace confirmed he remains in good condition. He was enjoying a private holiday with Queen Sonja before the medical scare occurred.
Why Was Norway King Harald Hospitalized?
Medical professionals quickly stepped in to treat the royal leader. Consequently, the king’s personal physician is flying out to Spain immediately. They will collaborate directly with local medical staff in Tenerife to ensure optimal care.
This incident marks another recent health hurdle for the historic monarch. This is significant because his health has been a recurring concern over the past few years.
Previously, a 2024 trip to Malaysia ended with a very similar medical emergency. During that crisis abroad, doctors installed a temporary pacemaker to stabilize his heart.

He later received a permanent pacemaker back in Norway.
-
He has served as Norway’s ceremonial head of state since 1991.
-
He holds the distinguished title of Europe’s oldest living monarch.
Meanwhile, national leaders are pausing to send their best regards. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere addressed the sudden situation while visiting Ukraine.
Speaking directly to the public broadcaster NRK, he stated, “I wish our king a speedy recovery.”
