Muslims across Nigeria are set to begin the holy fasting month of Ramadan on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.
This confirmation comes directly from the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III. As the President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), the Sultan acts as the ultimate authority on moon sightings within the country.
Consequently, the uncertainty regarding the start date has ended. The spiritual leader verified that reliable reports confirmed the sighting of the lunar crescent on Tuesday.
Official Confirmation of Ramadan 2026 in Nigeria
The declaration followed the sighting of the new moon on the 29th day of Sha’aban. This pivotal astronomical event signals the beginning of the Islamic calendar month of Ramadan 1447 AH.
According to a formal press statement, the moon was visible in nearly every region of the nation.
Professor Sambo Wali Junaid, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, signed the statement released in Sokoto. He relayed the Sultan’s directive, noting that the council received positive sighting reports from numerous Islamic leaders nationwide.
In the statement, the Sultan “called on the entire Muslim community in the country to commence the fast on Wednesday in accordance with the teachings of Islam.”
Focus on National Prayers and Security
Beyond the logistics of the calendar, the Sultan emphasized the spiritual weight of this period. He specifically highlighted the need for collective spiritual intervention regarding national stability.
The statement noted that the Sultan “urged Muslims to use the month of Ramadan to pray against the insecurity ravaging some parts of the country.”
Furthermore, he implored the faithful to dedicate this sacred time to praying for Nigerian leaders. The call to action focuses on seeking divine intervention to end the security challenges currently facing the nation.
Global Alignment on Fasting Date
Nigeria’s start date aligns with other major Islamic nations. Earlier on Tuesday, authorities in Saudi Arabia also confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon.
Consequently, the Kingdom declared that Wednesday would mark the first day of fasting for the holy month. This synchronization means millions of Muslims worldwide will begin their spiritual observance simultaneously.
