American streaming sensation Darren Watkins Jr., better known as IShowSpeed, is entering the final leg of an ambitious 28-day journey across Africa. The “Speed Does Africa” tour, which spanned 19 countries, aims to challenge global stereotypes by highlighting the continent’s vibrant cultural landscape rather than the typical narratives of hardship.

“I’ve done so many incredible things,” Watkins shared during a stop in Botswana. “But this trip opened my eyes. Africa is not what I thought.”

From Morocco to Ghana: Highlights of the Tour

The tour officially kicked off in Angola in late December and has been a whirlwind of viral moments and personal growth for the 21-year-old creator.

  • Morocco (Jan 18): Watkins attended the high-stakes Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, even making a surprise appearance as the tournament mascot.
  • Nigeria (Jan 21): Perhaps the tour’s most significant stop, where he celebrated his 21st birthday and became the first Black individual creator to surpass 50 million YouTube subscribers while live-streaming from the streets of Lagos.
  • Ghana (Jan 26): Upon arriving in Ghana, Watkins described the visit as “coming home,” revealing that his ancestry traces back to the West African nation. During his stay, he sampled local jollof rice, met with traditional royalty, and visited a shea butter museum.

Changing the Narrative or Playing a Character?

The tour has sparked a complex debate about representation and the role of influencers in cultural diplomacy.

Building Cultural Bridges

Many supporters, like Pape Seye of Senegal, praised Watkins for visiting historical landmarks like the House of Slaves on Gorée Island. Seye noted that such visits help Black Americans understand that their histories are deeply intertwined with the continent.

The Critical Lens

However, not all reactions have been positive. Beninese influencer Nelly Mbaa argues that Watkins’ high-energy, often “grotesque” persona caters to Western expectations of spectacle over substance. Critics suggest that if he were to drop the shouting and exaggerated facial expressions, his massive audience might lose interest.

Despite his success, Watkins remains a polarizing figure. His career has been marked by significant controversies, including bans in 2022 for sexist outbursts and the broadcast of inappropriate content.

The Final Stop

Following his time in Ghana, Watkins is expected to conclude his historic tour on Tuesday in Namibia.
