A heavy atmosphere of grief filled a sports complex in Vereeniging on Sunday as hundreds gathered to honor the lives of schoolchildren lost in a devastating bus collision. This memorial service brought together grieving families, high-ranking government officials, and fellow students to pay their final respects following a tragedy that has shaken the entire nation.
A National Moment of Grief
Panyaza Lesufi, the Premier of Gauteng province, addressed the crowd with an emotional tribute. He emphasized that this loss is felt far beyond the immediate families.
“We come here hurt. We come here disappointed. We come here disturbed. We come here limping and our emotions drained,” Premier Lesufi stated.
The service saw a significant turnout, including national ministers and pupils from various schools standing in solidarity. Personal stories shared during the ceremony highlighted the vibrant lives cut short. For instance, one victim was remembered by her cousin as a “bubbly” child who had a deep passion for dancing and life.
