Rwanda has formally endorsed Louise Mushikiwabo to serve a third term as Secretary General of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), the country’s Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe confirmed in a recent interview.
The announcement arrives about ten months ahead of the next OIF summit, scheduled for November 2026 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Strong Record of Change
Mushikiwabo, who previously served as Rwanda’s Foreign Minister, has led the 88-member organization since 2019. Kigali highlights her tenure as a period of deep and structured improvement, including:
- Greater global political influence
- Clearer internal governance and operations
- Stronger delivery of programs across member countries
Under her leadership, the OIF has actively promoted Francophone candidates for leadership roles in major bodies such as the African Union, African Development Bank and UNESCO.
A Chance for Historic Milestone
Last November, Mushikiwabo disclosed that multiple member states had already urged her to seek re-election. If successful, she would become only the second person — after former Senegalese President Abdou Diouf to hold the post for three full terms.
The official candidacy window remains open until April 2026.
