President Donald Trump has signed a Presidential Memorandum directing the United States to leave 66 multilateral bodies, calling it a major step to put American priorities first and safeguard national independence.
The White House says the move ends funding for groups that no longer benefit the country.
Which Groups Are Affected?
The exits split into two categories:
- 31 United Nations-related agencies and programs
- 35 other global institutions, from economic forums to specialised alliances
Officials claim these organisations often push agendas that clash with U.S. security, values or independence.
Reasons Behind the Decision
The administration lists three main issues:
- Promotion of extreme climate rules seen as harmful to American interests
- Poor results despite large U.S. contributions
- Unfair burdens on American businesses
The White House insists taxpayers will keep billions previously sent abroad.
Part of “America First” Strategy
This fits Trump’s broader approach since returning to office:
- Immediate start of WHO withdrawal
- End of Paris Climate Agreement involvement
- Rejection of OECD global tax pact
- No more funding for UN Human Rights Council or UNRWA
Savings will go toward roads, defence and border protection at home.
Critics argue the pullouts could weaken U.S. global standing, but the administration says engagement must clearly serve America or stop.
