UNICEF has highlighted a sharp increase in sexual attacks on children at the Rhoo displacement site in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where ongoing fighting has left young people extremely exposed.
The warning comes as armed factions, including M23, advance, but the agency stresses abuse occurs even far from battle lines.
Lasting Trauma for Survivors
Medical staff at the camp describe children arriving in deep distress, showing:
- Overwhelming terror and worry
- Ongoing rage
- Deep emotional scars
One 13-year-old girl was attacked while on a simple task outside the camp. Even after treatment, she battles constant pain in body and mind.
Trapped in Danger
Families feel confined inside the camp boundaries:
- Movement restricted to avoid threats
- Fighters operate close to the entrance
- Basic trips for water or food turn deadly
No Path to Justice
Survivors rarely report incidents due to:
- Threats of retaliation
- Difficulty identifying attackers amid chaos
- Weak or absent courts in remote war zones
Call for Immediate Action
Aid groups urge stronger protection around camps and more medical and mental health care for those affected. Without swift help, the violence risks scarring another generation.
