Super Eagles vs. Mozambique: The Quest for the Last Eight

Super Eagles

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has reached the high-stakes elimination stage. This Monday, the Nigerian Super Eagles face the Mambas of Mozambique at the Fez Stadium in Morocco. While Nigeria is hunting for a fourth continental title, Mozambique is making a historic first appearance in the knockout rounds.

Nigeria’s Dominant Path to the Round of 16

Nigeria entered the knockout phase as the tournament’s most consistent team. Specifically, they were one of only two nations to finish the group stage with a perfect nine points. This flawless run through Group C included victories over Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda. Consequently, these wins have restored national pride following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Under the guidance of Eric Chelle, the “Best Coach of the Group Stage,” Nigeria’s offense has flourished. They finished the opening round as the highest-scoring side. This offensive efficiency makes them a dangerous opponent for any team.

A Historic Milestone for Mozambique

In contrast, Mozambique’s journey has been a test of pure resilience. Despite suffering two defeats in Group F, they progressed as one of the best third-placed teams. They secured this spot after a vital win against Gabon. Although their entry was narrow, the achievement is massive. This match marks the first time in history that Mozambique has reached the AFCON knockout phase.

However, the Mambas face a difficult statistical challenge. Historically, the team has struggled to defend. They have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their 18 career AFCON matches. Therefore, they must improve their defensive discipline to survive Nigeria’s attack.

Star Players and Squad Depth

Nigeria possesses incredible roster depth. Although Cyriel Dessers and Ryan Alebiosu are out with injuries, the Super Eagles still boast a world-class lineup:

  • The Attack: Led by Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Samuel Chukwueze.

  • The Midfield: Anchored by Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka, and Alex Iwobi.

  • The Wildcard: Raphael Onyedika is pushing for a start after scoring twice against Uganda.

  • The Defense: Controlled by Calvin Bassey and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Meanwhile, Mozambique will rely on Geny Catamo. He has already scored half of the team’s goals in this tournament. Coach Chiquinho Conde must find a way to bridge the gap between Nigeria’s 30th-place FIFA ranking and Mozambique’s 102nd.

Historical Head-to-Head

History heavily favors Nigeria. In five previous meetings, the Super Eagles have won four and drawn once. Their only prior AFCON meeting was in 2010, resulting in a 3–0 victory for Nigeria.

While the Super Eagles are the clear favorites, the Mambas hope to create the tournament’s biggest upset in Fez.
