Nigeria plunged into darkness Monday afternoon when the national electricity grid failed completely around 3:00 PM, leaving millions without power.
From Peak to Near-Zero
Power output had climbed to about 4,800 megawatts earlier in the day. By evening, it crashed to only 139MW — effectively shutting down the entire system.
Every Plant Offline
All 22 power stations connected to the grid stopped generating. This total shutdown has caused blackouts in nearly every state.
Why It Happened
Officials have not yet named the exact trigger. The incident follows recent efforts to boost supply after gas pipeline vandalism cut fuel to plants.
Recovery Efforts Underway
Engineers are preparing a “black start” — the complex process of restarting the grid from scratch. This will gradually restore electricity to homes, hospitals and businesses.
Authorities are investigating the cause and promise updates soon as restoration work continues into the night.
