A fatal Moscow explosion has claimed the lives of two police officers, marking the second lethal bombing in the capital within 48 hours.
Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed the deaths on Wednesday. The blast occurred overnight as officers attempted to intercept a suspicious individual near their service vehicle.
According to officials, an “explosive device was triggered” the moment law enforcement approached the suspect. This latest incident has placed the city on high alert, specifically due to its geographic proximity to a high-profile murder earlier in the week.
Deadly Pattern: Second Attack in Two Days
Investigators are now probing potential links between Wednesday’s Moscow explosion and the assassination of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Just 48 hours prior, on Monday, Sarvarov was killed when a bomb detonated underneath his parked car. As the head of the Russian General Staff’s training department, his death was a significant blow to the military hierarchy.
Authorities are scrutinizing the similarities between the two events. Both involved explosive devices and occurred in the same district, raising concerns of a coordinated campaign targeting state officials.
Forensic Analysis Underway
Security forces have cordoned off the area to preserve evidence. Footage from the scene captures forensic specialists working under floodlights, racing to process the site before sunrise.
The Investigative Committee has outlined three primary focus areas for the probe:
-
Chemical Profiling: Experts are examining bomb remnants to identify the explosive compounds used.
-
Medical Forensics: Teams are conducting autopsies and physical examinations of the victims.
-
Scene Reconstruction: Investigators are gathering physical debris to piece together the mechanics of the blast.
Witnesses reported hearing the detonation at approximately 1:30 am local time.
Rising Tensions
This violence follows a documented trend of targeted attacks against Russian military and pro-Kremlin figures since early 2022. While these incidents initially concentrated on occupied territories, they have increasingly shifted to within Russian borders.
Kyiv has claimed responsibility for various operations in the past. However, Ukrainian officials have remained silent regarding both General Sarvarov’s death and the blast that killed the two officers.
