Retired Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has officially solidified his status as a Nigerian icon. On Tuesday, the 32-year-old defender confirmed he has physically received his Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) certificate.
This prestigious recognition highlights the defender’s immense contribution to Nigerian sports.
Presidential Recognition and National Pride
President Bola Tinubu conferred the honor on Monday, celebrating the former captain’s service. The certificate, issued under Section 1(4) of the National Honours Act, explicitly praises Troost-Ekong’s “outstanding virtues.” Furthermore, it grants him the full dignity and privileges associated with the MFR rank.
This accolade is significant because it validates the sacrifices athletes make for national glory.
Reacting to the award, William Troost-Ekong expressed profound gratitude for the platform Nigeria provided him.
“Wearing the green and white has always been a great responsibility, privilege, and a promise to give everything for the badge,” Troost-Ekong stated.
Fulfillment of 2023 AFCON Pledges
The timing of this award aligns with the Federal Government’s completion of promises made to the 2023 AFCON silver-winning squad. Although that tournament concluded nearly two years ago, the National Sports Commission has now finalized the reward package.
Specifically, the government has delivered on the following:
-
Housing: Every squad member has received a house.
-
Land Gifts: Both players and backroom staff were awarded property.
-
Titles: Teammates were previously honored as Members of the Order of the Niger (MON).
Rallying Behind the New Squad
While celebrating his personal milestone, the veteran defender turned his attention to the current generation. The Super Eagles are currently in Morocco, preparing for their 2025 AFCON opener against Tanzania.
Troost-Ekong voiced strong confidence in the team’s ability to capture the continental trophy he chased during his active years.
“I believe in this group, our nation, and what we can achieve,” the former captain added.
