Rescues over 500 migrants

A potential maritime tragedy was narrowly avoided early Friday morning. In a massive coordinated effort, the Hellenic Coast Guard successfully rescues over 500 migrants from a distress vessel near Gavdos.

The operation was triggered after a boat carrying 545 people signaled for help south of the island.

This incident underscores the growing pressure on migration routes in the Mediterranean.

International Team Deploys for Rescue

Authorities did not act alone. To manage the sheer scale of the emergency, the Coast Guard deployed three patrol boats. Furthermore, they were bolstered by three vessels from Frontex, the European border agency.

Commercial ships in the vicinity also diverted their courses to assist.

Consequently, all passengers were safely transferred to the shores of Crete.

Demographics and Logistics

Upon arrival at the port of Agia Galini, officials processed the survivors. Reports confirm the group consists mainly of men hailing from:

  • Bangladesh

  • Egypt

  • Pakistan

Following their initial landing, authorities moved the group to a temporary holding facility in the Latzimas area of Rethymno.

Concerns Over Housing Conditions

While the rescue was a success, the aftermath presents new challenges. Local teams have scrambled to provide essential mattresses and blankets for the night.

However, officials have raised alarm bells regarding the suitability of the Latzimas facility. There are serious doubts about whether the site is equipped to house such a large number of people, even briefly.

A Day of Intense Activity

This was not an isolated event. Earlier on Friday, authorities conducted a separate operation south of Gavdos, saving another 32 people. Those individuals were transported to Paleochora.

These back-to-back incidents highlight a spike in traffic along the southern maritime corridor.
