Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has officially announced his retirement from international football. This decision draws the curtain on a stellar 15-year career.

The 33-year-old winger currently holds the record as Nigeria’s most capped player. He made the announcement in an emotional statement on social media on Wednesday afternoon.

Consequently, Musa leaves the international stage as one of Nigeria’s most decorated players. He earned a record 111 caps. Furthermore, he scored critical goals on the world’s biggest stages.

“Wearing the Green and White Meant Everything”

Reflecting on his journey, Musa expressed deep gratitude. He thanked the nation for the opportunity to serve. Furthermore, he recalled his early days juggling call-ups between youth teams and the senior squad. He noted that his commitment to Nigeria never wavered.

“After a lot of thought, I have decided to retire from international football, bringing to an end almost 15 years with the Super Eagles,” Musa stated. “From the very first call-up, wearing the green and white meant everything to me.”

He reminisced about his start as a “young boy.” Coaches invited him simultaneously to the U-20, U-23, and Super Eagles squads. Despite the grueling travel schedule, Musa emphasized that he “never complained.” Instead, he always answered the call without hesitation.

A Legacy of Records and Triumphs

Historic milestones define Musa’s career. He expressed immense pride in becoming the most capped player in Nigerian history. He stated that he treats this feat with “deep respect.”

His career highlights include:

  • AFCON Glory: He played a pivotal role in the squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.
  • World Cup History: He became the first Nigerian to score more than once in a FIFA World Cup match (vs. Argentina, 2014).
  • Top Scorer: He is the first Nigerian to score in two separate World Cups. Currently, he holds the record as Nigeria’s highest World Cup goalscorer with four goals.

“Winning the 2013 AFCON will always stand out. That team showed what it meant to play for Nigeria,” he said. Additionally, he noted that his goals against Argentina and Iceland are memories he will “always carry.”

Gratitude and Next Steps

Musa extended his thanks to his teammates, coaches, and backroom staff. Moreover, he thanked Nigerian fans for their unwavering support over the last decade. He affirmed that he steps away with “peace and gratitude.”

“I know the Super Eagles will continue to move forward. And I know that this bond will never be broken. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle,” he concluded.

Although his international chapter closes, Musa remains active in domestic football. He returned to Kano Pillars in October 2024 for his third stint. Currently, he serves as a player while also taking on the role of General Manager ahead of the 2025–26 Nigeria Professional Football League season.
