FIRE

A devastating fire has swept through the Elegushi Model Market complex in Lekki, Lagos State, destroying at least 48 shops.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the destruction but noted that emergency teams successfully prevented the blaze from spreading to neighboring structures.

The Incident

According to Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, the agency received a distress call around 2:00 a.m. Upon arrival, the response team found the market already engulfed in flames.

Oke-Osanyintolu reported that the emergency responders worked swiftly to contain the inferno.

“Coordinated efforts by all stakeholders ensured the fire was completely extinguished and prevented it from affecting neighbouring structures,” he stated.

Cause and Casualties

Preliminary investigations by LASEMA’s Shark Response Team traced the origin of the fire to a makeshift stall within the market compound. From there, the flames escalated rapidly, spreading to the main building.

Fortunately, officials reported no casualties or injuries.

“The exact cause is yet to be determined. Thankfully, no lives were lost,” Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed.

Aftermath and Assessment

Following the extinguishment of the fire, a post-disaster assessment revealed the extent of the damage. Authorities confirmed that 48 shops were completely affected by the blaze.

Call for Safety Measures

In the wake of the disaster, LASEMA has issued a strong warning regarding fire prevention, particularly as the dry season approaches—a period often associated with frequent fire outbreaks in Nigeria.

Oke-Osanyintolu emphasized the need for vigilance among traders:

  • Fire Extinguishers: Market unions were advised to position extinguishers strategically to manage minor incidents before they escalate.
  • Detection Systems: Shop owners were urged to install smoke detectors and fire alarms.
  • Sensitization: Traders have been briefed on essential fire safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
