Former Manchester United star Jesse Lingard has bid a tearful goodbye to South Korean football. He brought his two-year chapter to an emotional close on Wednesday night.
The 32-year-old midfielder made his final appearance for FC Seoul count. He scored the opening goal in an AFC Champions League clash against Melbourne City. Although the match ended in a 1-1 draw, the night belonged to Lingard.
In the 31st minute, Lingard coolly slotted the ball home. He gave Seoul the lead and celebrated in style. True to his reputation as a showman, he performed a Michael Jackson-style moonwalk, delighting the home crowd one last time.
An Emotional Tribute
The atmosphere turned poignant after the final whistle. Lingard has made 60 appearances for the club since joining last February.
He broke down in tears as a tribute video played on the stadium’s big screen.
The video addressed him as “Our beloved captain.” It delivered a final message: “Your name and legacy will always be remembered in the history of our club. Seoul will always be your home.”
Lingard addressed the fans and applauded their support. He then hugged his teammates during a final lap of honour.
‘I’ve Become More Mature’
Speaking on the eve of the match, the former England international reflected on his time in Asia. He described it as “a happy two years.”
He emphasized how the experience changed him. Specifically, wearing the captain’s armband forced him to grow.
“I’ve learned a lot, I’ve become more mature, I’ve had a lot of responsibility this year being captain,”said Lingard.
The midfielder, who played in the 2018 World Cup semi-final, believes this chapter was vital for his personal growth.
“I can leave South Korea more mature, I believe,” he concluded.
