EMERGENCY

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially declared a state of emergency in the region. This decisive announcement reflects deep concern over the recent surge in military takeovers and political instability across West Africa.

The declaration was delivered by Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, on Tuesday. He spoke during the 55th session of the mediation and security council, held at the ministerial level in Abuja.

Context of Regional Instability

The ministerial meeting was convened specifically in response to a turbulent period marked by a string of successful coups and attempted mutinies.

President Touray stated that these developments necessitate “serious introspection on the future of our democracy”. He added that they underscore the “urgent need to invest in the security of our community”.

The emergency declaration follows:

  • Successful coups in Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea.
  • The recent failed coup attempt in the Benin Republic.
  • A period of political uncertainty and a military faction’s attempt to seize power in Guinea-Bissau last month.
