Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu has officially launched a new onion cold-storage facility. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Monday in the More area of the state capital.

During the event, the Governor described the project as a “game-changing investment.” He stated that it is intended to transform the state’s agricultural landscape.

Strategic Partnership to Curb Losses

The government developed this project in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI). The primary goal is to address critical challenges facing farmers. Specifically, the facility aims to reduce post-harvest losses and increase storage capacity.

Governor Aliyu highlighted the benefits of this partnership. He noted that it leverages MOFI’s resources to strengthen production. Furthermore, it will improve the processing and distribution of onions and other agricultural products.

Modernizing for Export

Sokoto is currently Nigeria’s leading producer of onions. However, Governor Aliyu emphasized that the sector requires modernization. This step is crucial to reaching its full commercial potential.

He argued that upgrading support systems is essential. Consequently, this will attract investment and position the state’s produce for export beyond national borders.

Investments in Inputs and Mechanization

The Governor reaffirmed that agriculture is a top priority under his “9-Point Smart Innovative Agenda.” He detailed several recent financial commitments to the sector:

  • Fertilizer: The government procured 38,000 bags of fertilizer this year. This investment is worth over N1.8 billion for subsidized distribution.
  • Seeds and Chemicals: The state invested N60 million in improved seeds for crops like rice, maize, and millet. Additionally, N36 million was spent on herbicides and insecticides.
  • Tractors: To boost mechanization, the government awarded a contract of N22.1 billion for 250 Massey Ferguson tractors. Notably, a 50 percent down payment has already been made to ensure delivery.
  • Irrigation: Rehabilitation works are currently ongoing. These efforts target the Lugu Dam and Kware irrigation scheme to support all-year farming.

Economic Vision and Job Creation

Governor Aliyu outlined a broader vision for the state. He aims to establish Sokoto as a major agricultural export hub in Africa. Officials expect the cold-storage facility to stabilize onion prices. Additionally, it will significantly reduce waste by preserving quality.

The initiative is also designed to create sustainable jobs. It will specifically target women and youth while empowering farmers with technology. Finally, Governor Aliyu commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He noted that federal economic reforms are creating a platform for states like Sokoto to thrive.
