Pep Guardiola joked that broadcasters should thank him and Fulham manager Marco Silva with a bottle of fine wine after Manchester City survived a nine-goal rollercoaster to beat Fulham 5-4 on Tuesday night.
From Comfortable Lead to Nail-Biting Finish
City raced into a 5-1 lead at Craven Cottage. Then Fulham struck three times late on, turning a routine win into a frantic scramble.
“If I was at home watching that, I wouldn’t have switched channels,” Guardiola laughed. “The TV companies must be very happy they owe Marco and me a good bottle of red!”
Defensive Worries Grow
Despite being the Premier League’s top scorers, City have conceded 16 goals this season nine more than leaders Arsenal. Six came in the last two games alone.
“We cannot keep letting in four goals and hope to win the league,” Guardiola said. “We score a lot, but we must defend better — and that starts with everyone, not just the back line or the goalkeeper.”
High Praise for Sunderland
City welcome sixth-placed Sunderland this weekend, and Guardiola has nothing but respect for the promoted side.
“You can talk about momentum after five good games. But after 14 matches in the Premier League, you are exactly where you deserve to be,” he said. “They have earned every point.”
