UN Slams Uganda’s Pre-Election Crackdown: Over 550 Arrested

SLAMS

The United Nations has issued a sharp rebuke to Uganda’s government over intensifying repression of opposition figures and journalists ahead of the 15 January 2026 general election.

Alarming Figures and Tactics

Since January, security forces have detained at least 550 people, with the majority linked to the National Unity Platform (NUP), the main opposition party led by presidential candidate Bobi Wine.

The UN report spotlighted the widespread use of unmarked white minibuses — nicknamed “drones” to snatch activists off the streets. Victims are then taken to undisclosed “safe houses” where they are held without access to lawyers or family.

Media Under Attack

Journalists face growing harassment, including sudden loss of press credentials for coverage deemed unfavourable to the government.

UN Demands Immediate Action

The world body called on Kampala to:

  • End all repressive measures at once
  • Free everyone held without charge
  • Guarantee free and fair campaigning

The warning comes as 81-year-old President Yoweri Museveni campaigns for another term after nearly 40 years in power.
