The National Economic Council (NEC) has authorized the release of N100 billion. This fund aims to rehabilitate training institutions for the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies.
The Council reached this significant financial commitment during its 154th meeting on Wednesday. However, the disbursement remains subject to final ratification by President Bola Tinubu.
In addition to the rehabilitation fund, the Council approved N2.6 billion. This amount covers consultancy services to ensure the project meets required standards.
Addressing Dilapidated Infrastructure
The approval follows a critical report by an ad hoc committee. Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, chaired this committee. He presented a grim picture of the current state of the institutions.
During his presentation, Governor Mbah underscored the urgency of the intervention. He noted that the majority of training schools are in “dire condition.” Consequently, this situation undermines the capacity of security personnel to protect the nation effectively.
This move aligns with President Tinubu’s earlier proposal. At the 152nd NEC meeting in October, the President called for a total overhaul of the training architecture for the country’s security apparatus.
Shettima Calls for Tangible Governance
Vice President Kashim Shettima, the NEC Chairman, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment. Beyond the approval, he delivered a strong charge to the 36 state governors.
Shettima urged them to ensure that economic reforms translate into measurable improvements. He warned that the era of “policy without results” must end.
“Our task is not to admire problems, but to solve them,” Shettima stated. He added, “Not to explain challenges, but to overcome them.”
He urged leaders at all levels to move beyond rhetoric and focus on execution. The Vice President insisted that governance is only meaningful when citizens feel its impact in markets, schools, and clinics across the federation.
