The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has issued a stern warning to corps members regarding the dangers of embarking on journeys without official authorization.
Addressing the 2025 Batch ‘C’ corps members currently at the Orientation Camp in Edo State, the DG emphasized that bypassing official travel protocols exposes participants to avoidable highway risks.
He stressed that safety on Nigerian roads remains a critical concern and urged all service members to strictly adhere to the established guidelines before leaving their states of deployment.
“Avoid Unnecessary Risks”
General Nafiu specifically highlighted the dangers associated with night travel, identifying it as a leading contributor to preventable tragedies recorded during service years. He advised corps members to prioritize their safety by planning their movements carefully and avoiding high-risk situations.
“When travelling, always ensure you have authorisation. Do not put yourself in harm’s way on the highway,” the Director-General stated.
He further charged the corps members to take personal responsibility for their security, particularly when navigating unfamiliar environments at their places of primary assignment.
“You must take responsibility for your safety. Avoid unnecessary risks. Do not travel at night. Always be aware of your surroundings,” he added.
Combatting Misinformation and Social Vices
Beyond physical security, the DG addressed the issue of responsible social media usage. He cautioned members against the spread of unverified information, noting that circulating fake news often incites unnecessary panic. He urged them to establish facts before posting online.
On the subject of conduct, Brigadier General Nafiu warned against involvement in social vices such as cultism, cybercrime, and thuggery.
He noted that engaging in criminal activities or violent groups could permanently derail their futures and jeopardize their personal integrity.
While reaffirming the Scheme’s commitment to protecting young graduates, the DG concluded that personal discipline and adherence to safety rules remain the most effective line of defense.
