The Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF) has expressed strong support for the National Sports Commission (NSC). The federation commended the directive to construct Olympic-standard swimming facilities for the next three hosts of the National Sports Festival (NSF).

NAqF described the decision as a landmark development. It promises to redefine the trajectory of aquatic sports in the country.

A “Milestone Achievement”

NAqF President Dunkwu Chamberlain lauded the initiative. Construction will begin with the upcoming games in Enugu and continue with future hosts, including Bayelsa.

Chamberlain characterized the move as a clear demonstration of the Commission’s renewed dedication. He noted that the absence of world-class facilities has long hampered athlete preparation.

“This approval will enhance training environments and raise competition standards,” Chamberlain stated. He emphasized that these facilities provide a solid foundation for Nigeria’s global ambitions.

Vision 2050: A Pool in Every State

Federation Secretary Taiwo Oriss echoed these sentiments. He termed the initiative a “strategic breakthrough.”

“With full implementation, this move will strengthen grassroots participation,” Oriss said. “It puts us on a clear path to achieving an Olympic-size swimming pool in every Nigerian state before 2050.”

The federation reaffirmed its commitment to the project. They will collaborate with the NSC to ensure the pools meet international standards.

Major Resolutions from Calabar

The commendation follows the 2025 National Council on Sports meeting in Calabar. During the session, the council approved the pools and confirmed future hosts.

Bayelsa State will host the festival in 2028, followed by Kaduna State in 2030.

Other Key Decisions Included:

  • National Intermediate Games: A new competition for athletes aged 17–20 to bridge the gap between junior and elite levels.
  • Anti-Cheating Measures: The adoption of strict sanctions to curb age falsification.
  • Athlete Welfare: Mandatory insurance coverage for athletes in national competitions.

NSC Director General Bukola Olopade reiterated the Commission’s resolve. He aims to build an accountable sports sector supported by robust infrastructure.
