President Bola Tinubu has launched Nigeria’s biggest security shake-up in years, calling the current kidnapping surge a full-blown national emergency.
The Three-Point Overhaul
- 50,000 New Officers An extra 20,000 recruits added to the 30,000 already planned — the largest single expansion in decades.
- VIP Police Pulled Back to Streets Officers guarding politicians, celebrities and business moguls will be immediately redeployed to protect ordinary citizens. Up to 100,000 personnel one-third of the entire police force — are currently tied up in private protection duties.
- Forest Rangers Go on the Offensive Rangers now have the green light to launch military-style operations inside the vast forest hideouts used by bandit gangs for more than ten years.
Why Now?
Last Friday’s abduction of 303 schoolchildren in remote Papiri village shocked the nation. Fifty managed to escape, but the incident exposed how deeply criminal networks have entrenched themselves.
Government’s Message
“This is war against criminals who terrorise our people,” the Presidency said. “Every available resource will be thrown at them until citizens can sleep with their eyes closed.”
The sweeping changes come amid growing international concern, with the U.S. pressing Nigeria over security in the north while Abuja insists the violence is purely criminal, not religious.
From palaces to forests, Nigeria’s security map is being redrawn — starting now.
