South African police have launched a criminal investigation into Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former president Jacob Zuma, for allegedly tricking 17 young men into joining Russia’s fight in Ukraine.
The Hawks, the country’s elite crime-fighting unit, are handling the case after a family member filed an official complaint.
What Happened?
- 17 South African men aged 20–39 were promised high-paying “security jobs” abroad
- Upon arrival in Russia, they were handed over to a mercenary group and forced to the front lines
- Earlier this month the men sent desperate pleas to Pretoria begging to be brought home
The complaint was lodged by Duduzile’s half-sister, Nkosazana Bonganini Zuma-Mncube, who accuses her of masterminding the deception.
Two other suspects are also under investigation for helping recruit and transport the men.
Another Legal Battle for Duduzile
The 42-year-old MK Party lawmaker already faces separate charges linked to the violent 2021 riots that killed over 350 people.
Her lawyers have not yet responded to the new allegations.
South African law bans citizens from fighting in foreign conflicts without government permission. If convicted, the suspects could face lengthy prison terms.
