A wave of outrage has followed a tragic event in North-West Nigeria. UNICEF condemns the Kebbi school attack that occurred in the Maga community. The violent assault on the Government Girls’ School resulted in the death of a Vice-Principal and the abduction of 25 students.
Susan Akila, a communications specialist for UNICEF Nigeria, addressed the crisis on Tuesday. She issued a strong statement emphasizing the horror of the situation.
Response to the Deadly Kebbi School Attack
The agency described the incident as a stark reminder of the dangers facing Nigerian children. Consequently, they demanded the immediate release of all captives.
“We stand with the affected community at this difficult time,” the statement read. “Our heartfelt condolences go to those who have lost loved ones.”
Furthermore, UNICEF insisted that the perpetrators face justice. They argued that attacks on education violate fundamental human rights. Therefore, authorities must hold the attackers accountable under both national and international standards.
Enforcing the Safe Schools Declaration
The organization also highlighted policy commitments. In 2015, the Nigerian government endorsed the Safe Schools Declaration. This framework outlines specific steps to keep educational institutions civilian and safe during conflicts.
However, recent events suggest more work is needed. UNICEF condemns the Kebbi school attack as a violation of this safety pledge. As a result, the agency urged all stakeholders to accelerate the declaration’s implementation.
UNICEF remains committed to collaborating with the government and civil society. Their shared goal is to strengthen child protection systems nationwide. Ultimately, the agency asserts that no student should fear violence while pursuing an education.
