A heartbreaking chapter has closed for the family of a Tanzanian student caught in the crossfire of the October 7 attacks. On Tuesday, a solemn ceremony at Ben Gurion Airport marked the moment Joshua Loitu Mollel remains returned to his homeland.
Mollel, a 21-year-old agricultural intern, had arrived in Israel with bright ambitions. Tragically, he had been at Kibbutz Nahal Oz for only 19 days before Hamas militants launched their devastating assault in 2023.
A Dream of Farming Cut Short
Mollel had recently graduated from an agricultural college in Tanzania. He traveled to Israel to gain advanced farming skills, which he planned to use to build a business back home. However, those dreams were violently extinguished.
During the airport ceremony, Alex Gabriel Kalua, Tanzania’s ambassador to Israel, honored the young student’s memory. He expressed the collective grief of his nation.
“A young man, Joshua, with so much promise… his dream was cut short by his brutal killing,” Kalua stated. “His loss is deeply felt not only by his family but also by the government and the people of Tanzania.”
Ongoing Efforts for Hostages
The recovery of Joshua Loitu Mollel remains returned brings the count of confirmed deceased hostages still in Gaza to three. Israeli authorities are continuing to negotiate exchanges, trading Palestinian bodies for the remains of abductees.
Approximately 250 individuals were originally seized during the October 7 invasion. While a fragile ceasefire currently holds in Gaza, the region remains volatile. Israel has reported continued strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, while IDF raids persist in the West Bank.
Despite the tension, the return of Mollel’s body offers a measure of closure to a family that has waited over two years for this day.
