Cabinet Shock: President Hassan Appoints Daughter, Son-in-Law

DAUGHTER

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has ignited widespread political debate with her latest cabinet restructuring. The controversy centers on her decision to appoint close family members to prominent government roles, a move critics are immediately labeling a clear case of nepotism.

Key Family Appointments

The announcement was made during a televised address from Chamwino State House in Dodoma on November 17, 2025. This occurred just weeks after President Hassan secured a landslide victory in the October 29 general elections.

  • Daughter Appointed: The President named her daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, as the new Deputy Minister of Education, Science, and Technology.
  • Son-in-Law Appointed: Her son-in-law, Mohamed Mchengerwa, was elevated to the post of Minister of Health.

The complete new lineup features 27 ministers and 29 deputy ministers, blending experienced figures with new faces. However, the elevation of the President’s immediate family has overwhelmingly dominated headlines across East Africa.

A Reshuffle Blending Old and New

President Hassan secured 97.66% of the recent election vote, despite international concerns about the poll’s competitiveness. She wasted no time in assembling her final-term team. Seven senior officials from the previous cabinet were dropped, including the Ministers of Energy and Agriculture.

Other key movements in the new cabinet include:

  • Khamis Mussa Omar taking over as the new Finance Minister, replacing Mwigulu Nchemba, who previously transitioned to Prime Minister.
  • Ridhiwani Kikwete, son of a former Tanzanian President, was promoted to Minister of Civil Service Management and Good Governance.
  • Prof. Adolf Mkenda retained his post as Minister of Education, now assisted by Wanu Hafidh Ameir.

Wanu Hafidh Ameir, already a Member of Parliament, enters her deputy role with a focus on advancing STEM education. Her husband, Mohamed Mchengerwa, previously served as Minister of Local Governments and Regional Administration before assuming leadership of the Health Ministry. He now takes charge as the country faces challenges in post-pandemic recovery and ensuring rural healthcare access.

Nepotism Concerns Echo Across Africa

The elevation of family members has sparked intense public backlash. Opposition figures and civil society groups argue that the move undermines meritocracy and erodes public trust. This criticism is magnified given the background of an election previously marked by violence, internet shutdowns, and the exclusion of major challengers.

“Tanzania deserves leaders chosen for expertise, not family ties,” asserted one anonymous Member of Parliament in Dodoma. Social media activity quickly surged under the hashtag #NepotismInDodoma. Critics immediately drew parallels to other African nations:

  • Uganda: President Yoweri Museveni has appointed his wife as Minister of Education and his son as the head of defense forces.
  • Rwanda: President Paul Kagame recently dismissed rumors of grooming his own daughter for office, emphasizing a commitment to equal opportunity.

Analysts caution that such appointments risk stifling youth participation and could fuel wider discontent in a nation already grappling with high inflation and youth unemployment.

The Path Forward

Supporters of the President defend the appointments as strategic. They cite Ameir’s parliamentary experience and Mchengerwa’s established administrative track record.

The new cabinet faces urgent tasks, with Tanzania’s economy projected to grow by 6.5% in 2026. Priorities include boosting education access, strengthening healthcare infrastructure, and tackling rampant corruption.

As the swearing-in ceremony approaches on November 18, 2025, all attention is focused on President Hassan. The nation’s future trajectory hinges on her ability to successfully balance the demands of political loyalty with the imperative of national accountability.
