Trump Announces Visa Ban Targeting ‘Grossly Overweight’

Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced a major new policy targeting visa seekers, impacting potential travelers from Nigeria and numerous other nations.

The President stated on Tuesday that his administration is actively drafting a regulation. This rule seeks to deny entry to individuals who are “grossly overweight” and simultaneously suffer from related health conditions.

Policy Rationale: Reducing Healthcare Burden

Writing on his social media platform, Mr. Trump defended the proposed restriction. He asserted the goal is to prevent individuals from unnecessarily “overburdening” the U.S. health system due to weight-related illnesses.

“We will not ban all fat people from entering our Great Country,” Mr. Trump posted, “only those whose poor health will overburden our health care system.”

He indicated the regulation will exempt those deemed only “slightly overweight.” However, he issued a direct mandate: “the bigger ones will need to trim down to get approved.”

The President also revealed future plans for expanding the measure. This expansion would encompass expatriates already residing in the country.

He suggested that “grossly overweight” individuals might eventually be unwelcome, regardless of their current status. “We will EXPAND this rule to cover Expats in the near future,” he stated.

Deepening Medical Scrutiny at Consulates

The President’s announcement aligns with a new directive recently dispatched to U.S. embassies worldwide. This guideline finalizes the administration’s broader policy shift.

The directive instructs consular officers to conduct an intensified review of all applicants’ medical histories. The objective is to identify individuals whose conditions suggest a future dependence on public healthcare services.

Under this renewed policy, consular officers now possess heightened authority to reject applications. This power is based on calculating not just current health problems, but also potential future medical costs. The guideline explicitly warns officers: “You must consider an applicant’s health.”

The official notice details various conditions that could lead to high treatment costs. These include cancer, diabetes, heart disease, lung ailments, and mental health disorders.

The guideline specifically identifies obesity as a major contributing factor. It suggests obesity can lead to conditions like cardiovascular diseases, asthma, and hypertension, thus driving up long-term healthcare expenditure.

Financial Viability and Family Risk

Visa officers now operate under a clear mandate. They must verify that applicants possess sufficient financial capacity to cover any possible future medical costs. This verification must confirm the applicant will not require government aid.

The new regulations also require officers to assess the health of the applicant’s family members, including elderly parents and children. This step determines whether future caregiving responsibilities might financially compromise the applicant’s ability to maintain stable finances within the United States.

This severe health scrutiny follows another recent announcement from Mr. Trump. He revealed a “fat shot” deal with pharmaceutical companies aimed at reducing the price of popular weight-loss drugs.
