Attention from the global football world is centered on Angola this week. Lionel Messi and the reigning Argentina national team are anticipated guests.
Their presence is the main feature of the nation’s grand celebration, marking the 50th anniversary of independence from Portugal.
The $13 Million Centerpiece
The highest profile event of the anniversary week is an exhibition match. The Angolan national team is scheduled to compete against Argentina on Friday.
The fixture will be held at Luanda’s 11 November Stadium, which bears the name of the country’s independence date.
Financial reports suggest the Angolan football federation invested heavily to ensure the presence of the World Cup champions and their star player. The estimated expense to host Messi and his teammates totals a reported $13 million.
Political Tensions Cloud Celebrations
The extravagant cost of the exhibition has provoked a significant backlash. Four civic organizations made a public request in August. They appealed directly to the Argentine team, asking them to decline participation in the scheduled game.
This demand for a boycott was raised following violent street protests. These demonstrations were sparked by a sharp increase in fuel prices.
Tragically, 30 individuals died in the resulting unrest. The civil groups accused officials in Angola of systematic repression. They contended that cancelling the match would send a strong message of international solidarity and respect for human rights.
Squad Status and Travel Plans
The Argentine squad remains scheduled to arrive in Angola on Thursday, despite the public controversy. However, four roster members will not be available for the friendly match. Three players will miss the game.
They did not receive the compulsory yellow fever vaccine required for entry into the country. The fourth player will be absent due to an undisclosed injury.
Angola’s week-long anniversary festivities formally commenced on Tuesday. The opening event featured a military parade held in the capital city, Luanda.
