Northern Afghanistan experienced a powerful earthquake overnight. The tremor measured 6.3 magnitude. On Monday, health officials verified that the seismic event killed a minimum of 20 individuals and wounded 320 others.
A spokesperson for the Health Ministry issued a warning. They stated that the death toll is expected to climb. Search and rescue crews are currently working through rubble in several impacted locations.
Tremor Details and Impact
Most of the casualties sustained only light injuries, according to Yousaf Hammad. He serves as a spokesman for the national disaster management agency. Hammad confirmed that numerous injured persons were discharged after initial medical care.
The United States Geological Survey pinpointed the quake’s epicenter. It was located 22 kilometers away from the town of Khulm.
The shaking originated at a depth of 28 kilometers. The capital, Kabul, also felt the effects of the earthquake. Balkh and Samangan provinces suffered the most extensive destruction.
The Ministry of Defence announced swift action. Rescue teams and emergency aid personnel have reached the affected ground. They commenced extensive rescue operations without delay.
Revered Mosque Sustains Damage
Visual evidence posted on social media reveals that the earthquake caused structural harm. This damage affected the Blue Mosque in Mazar-e-Sharif. This centuries-old holy site is one of Afghanistan’s most highly regarded religious landmarks.
Seismic activity is common in Afghanistan due to its geological setting. A previous magnitude 6 earthquake in late August tragically resulted in the deaths of at least 2,200 people.
